DIY With Megan & Jake

DIY Bride

DIY Bride Megan marries her gorgeous man Jake in a park Megan grew up going to and always knew she would one day marry in. Here is a little about their day that almost went without a hitch!

Disasters Diverted

“I surprisingly didn’t have a ‘Bridezilla moment’, and despite most of the wedding being DIY and the whole entire lead up was extremely stressful, almost everything went to plan. The only hiccup was that I booked our cake through someone I went to school with who makes gorgeous cakes, anyway my Maid of Honour picked it up the night before the wedding as we were all setting up the reception hall, and when she arrived the icing had completely melted off (it wasn’t even hot) and it was very very yellow?! (not even close to white/cream which I asked for) so luckily a family friend came to the rescue and took it home, completely re-iced it and no one would ever know.. but it tasted amazing so credit to her for that!”

“When I first began wedding planning, I spent hours on Pinterest searching ‘Boho wedding ideas’ or ‘Chic wedding ideas’ but I got so frustrated with myself because whenever I saw pictures come up, I was finding that most of the time I loved those styles, but there were just bits and pieces that I liked that were a bit more contemporary or luxe, but didn’t match the other styles, then I just gave in and decided that we don’t need to label our wedding with any particular ‘style’ it will be a mix and match of whatever we like, the ‘Megan and Jake’ style was the one we went with! Favourite memory from the day? and why? I mean the whole day was so perfect from start to finish.”

“Growing up in the Berwick area, I have been to Wilson Botanic Park countless times just for a lunch out, or a walk, and every single time I went there from as young as I can remember I always told myself this is where I want to get married. Then a few months after being with Jake we went there for a walk one day, and I told him this is my dream wedding spot, and he instantly said done, I love it. (Not knowing at all what the future held for us at that point!) But when we got engaged, there wasn’t even a discussion really, that was it! What was the inspiration behind your wedding style?”

“Typically I would love to say walking down the aisle was my favourite part, but it was so overwhelming I don’t think it was at all. After the ceremony finished and all the hype went down, and we got a minute to relax and get our portrait photos taken, I thought all the big moments were over and I didn’t feel nervous anymore, so we arrived at the Reception and freshened up whilst guests starting piling in, and we were lining up behind the Bridal Party outside the door to enter the Reception, and once Jake and I walked in holding hands, 160 of our closest family and friends all stood and applauded us, and I still get emotional about it, because you can’t even begin to explain to someone the feeling of a room full of that much love from 160 people that were there for US, and I didn’t know it was going to feel like that but it did, that was my favourite moment of the day.”

“All the typical advice people say is SO true- “Take in every moment”, “You blink and the day is over” “Don’t stress about the little things” but my advice to somebody who is planning a wedding themselves would be choose your Bridal Party very very wisely. Be 150% selfish (it’s probably the only time in your life you get to be), and only ask people you know will 1. Genuinely want to be by your side for the whole ride, 2. Have been there for you from the start, 3. Who will actually appreciate and understand the significance of standing next to somebody on the biggest day of their life while they marry their soulmate. DO NOT pick anybody because you feel like you should, or because you think it’s the right thing to do, or they might get upset if you don’t ask them. NO NO NO! Because there are a million things that Bride to be’s should be worrying about, but the reliability, the intentions and the care of your own bridal party should definitely not be one of them. No one wants to look back on treasured photos and have regrets like that.”
